Whatsapp sold to Facebook at US$16 billion
The cross-platform mobile messaging service Whatsapp has unpredictably entered into an agreement to be sold to Facebook at US$16 billion cash and topped with an additional US$3 billion in restricted stocks to WhatsApp employees.
But however, Facebook says Whatsapp will be continue to operate independently just like how they did with the previous acquisition of Instagram last year. Thus, it would not bring much effect to its existing users. It was said by both Mark Zulkerberg, the Co-Founder and CEO of Facebook and Jan Koum, the Co-Founder and CEO of Whatsapp that they shared the same focus which is to continue to bring their product to more people around the world and get them connected to each other with both Facebook and Whatsapp and ads will not be brought in which will interfere with user's experience.
While for the minor changes in WhatsApp, the co-founder and CEO Jan Koum will join Facebook’s board of directors as part of the deal, but his team will still remain stationed in their HQ which is in Mountain View, California.
